[2006-01-06] table of contents
well i don't have one yet, as you might have noticed. i'm still trying to decide on a method that would work best. there was a time when i thought a list would do - that fell through pretty badly. sorting by date also wasn't a super great idea.
i had a sorta neat idea that took too much work to manage - an image-oriented treeview. for the folder pictures and dots that went between them, you'd have an image that would be a bunch of dots in a constant area. there were i think 4 images, one for Ts, one for Ls, one for straight-throughs, and one for the folder picture. it was pretty, it sorted things out in a meaningful way, and i liked it. however, adding an item was a supreme pain in the ass.. hand-editing a series of lines and whatever was a pain. i suppose i could have made a program to automate the process, but it was still enough of a pain that it wasn't worth continuing.
so where does that leave me? i'm not really sure, honestly. i'm gonna have to go look at some web pages and see what do and don't like. i really think an faq style might suit me best, though.
it looks like i found a decent setup. it'll look like this:
section 1
subsection 1
sub-subsection 1
sub-subsection 2
sub-sub-subsection
subsection 2
subsection 3
section 2
subsection 1
looks pretty clean imo, and uses small tags. its really dirty html, for sure, but i can read it as i code the html, and thats all that matters to me. so now i can start categorizing. yay.
[2006-01-06] unfocused focii
so i didn't actually get anything done last night. i got myself so wound up thinking about what i could be doing, that i didn't actually accomplish anything. all i really want to do is look at theory and code samples of little things - mario tilemap hopping, moving around in a 3d block world, moving items around in inventory. my original journal was for just that, but it was really badly arranged.
so what was wrong with it before? i wanted to subcategorize things as i worked my way into specific areas of more complicated topics, and it got to the point where it was impossible to find what i was looking for. i'd have a topic heading and then a series of dates that i did stuff on it. at some point i should have taken the big chunks out of the main file and put them into its own page.
the table of contents should have been reorganized into a tree setup or something like an faq toc. i wanted to go to particular dates - but i should have had a better lookup system than that. perhaps it would have been best to write my thoughts out in notepad or whatever, and then categorize and arrange them after i was done. arranging by date isn't as important as topic, and thats where the focus has to stay.
lately my mind has been too unfocused on the "big picture". i'm not getting anything done at all anymore. i need to get back to looking at the little things, like i was before. i wasn't really getting anywhere back then, but i was accomplishing more than i am now. now that i have more focus on what i want out of my big projects, i should be able to focus on little bits of it from different angles, and things can be closer to falling together than they are now.
the projects page is a good idea, but i don't want to start there with what i'm going to treat like my old journal. maybe the best thing to do is write on a particular topic and then see about how to arrange it.
[working...]
well, i wrote up a bit on inventories but i didn't put it anywhere yet. i need to create a framework to follow so i can place it in there.
[2006-01-05] rethinking
i'm pretty sure this layout isn't what i want. what would work better, though? i'm not really sure yet. i need to think about how i want to use the page to look stuff up. i was looking at stuff in the projects section and i was thinking to myself, "i can't really look up anything very easily in here." i was also thinking that i can't add to a particular topic very easily either.
perhaps a better setup would be an faq method. i sort of have that with the Zelda / Diablo project, but its not very easy to look up stuff there yet. i think i'll play with it a bit.
[2005-12-16] slacking continues
i changed around the projects a little bit. i don't want everything all in the one page. now it's be sectioned off so i can journal on a particular project instead of how i'm doing it in the gd journal. i still want to add a 'game dissection' and 'draw night' section, but i'll wait until i have something to put in the sections first.
[2005-10-24] it... BEGINS! (again)
lots of content to stick in here. i just gotta arrange it all nicey nicey. well, lets start with a navbar.. ok, we got one item in it, [News]. it won't lead anywhere from here, cuz we're already at the news. well, i need a place to give info on my projects.. done. the downloads for the projects will probably be found in there. i need a place for general info, like irc chans and stuff about my system(s).. i guess that'll do for now. let's hyperlink 'em to pages that don't exist yet.. done and done.
hmm, now what? a todo list for zelda-diablo on the projects page, of course. i should put my book list up on the info page too. oh, and the irc chans i use. ^_^
