Aha!
I've traced my problem to an issue with my camera class - specifically with its LookAt function, not correctly setting up the views of the patches. I'm currently rewriting it to use a up/right/forward vector notation, instead of amounts to rotate around each axis x/y/z.

OK it looks like I'm going to be delayed in my plans for a while. My skeletal animation system isn't running very well. 30 FPS for a single 500 triangle isn't good enough.
