Making the move

Well it looks like I have a weekend to myself, and weekends are times for low traffic from the games (lots of cubicle-bound players out there), so I'm making the big server-move.

I uploaded everything, updated everyone's entries, migrated the database, changed the original code zone's .htaccess to point to the blog, and finally updated the DNS to point to the new site.

Now it's just a matter of waiting for the thing to propagate and see if everything starts working or if I'm gonna have to patch a hundred holes.

I wasn't able to test the commerce stuff on the temporary site, so I know I probably broke something there. It's just a wait-n-see thing now.

With a little luck, everything will 100% by Monday. Here's hoping.

On another note, I got my ownself a new laptop. Wal Mart has a new deal that every Friday in November is gonna be a Black Friday with some loss-leader deals. The first one was a $348 Acer laptop as well as a $99 HD-DVD player, a cheap plasma teevee and some cheap HD movies. Wal Mart always has some deals on cheap laptops around the holidays, but the laptops are usually pretty anemic. This one, though, looked pretty good, specifically 1 gb of memory, 80gb drive, 15 inch widescreen, and Vista.

The deal started at 8 am, but I took the gamble that since there weren't any new video consoles this year that I wouldn't have to line up for days. I got there at 7:15 and ended up about eighth in line. I ended up getting two laptops, one for me and one to replace CivilGrrl's five year-old laptop.

And I love it. Setup wasn't too hard, because it didn't come with too much preinstalled junk. I was initially heartened to see a lot of third-party games (Zuma, Jewel Quest, etc), but they were all trial versions so I got rid of 'em. Ditto for Norton.

Shelly pressed the new CivilGrrl laptop into service streaming teevee shows so she could knit, watch teevee, and lay in the bed in her jammies. Good work ethic there.

In fact I'm posting on it now. Our local parks have free wi-fi, so I'm thinking of heading down there just to be a complete geek.

Cheers!

My GF picked up that laptop for herself and the $99 HD-DVD player for her dad. We got the laptop set up this morning. The relative dearth of preinstalled shitware was a pleasant surprise; I fully expected a $348 laptop to come loaded to the gunwales with garbage. It's a pretty snappy little machine for the price and I only wish I'd had the presence of mind to have her grab 2 of them. Alas.

This little Linux machine is getting a lot of press at the moment, good price if you can live without Windows and just need it for the basics

Yeah I probably would've gotten one of those $200 PC's for Maggie if she didn't have one of our old machines already.

I figure if it'll run Firefox and Flash and can play AVI's, it'll cover about 90% of her needs.

I now think less of you as a human being. For shame :P

You are under the mistaken impression that I purchased the player and/or movies.
