Lotsa things about which to talk
I wanted to post extended rants about all of this stuff, but I got busy so I'll just post some micro-rants instead.

First off, I'm getting a 4% clickthru rate on my ad. Not .0004%, four percent. one out of every 25 people who see my ad click on it. I have the best ad in the history of banner-ads!

me gets external support
Amen

As I've said before, if you plan to write a game, don't write an engine. There are lots of good engines out there, most of 'em relatively cheap.

If you're working on a platform for which there's currently no decent middleware available, then you might be able to build a case for it. If, though, …

Number 11
I'm working on Daily Puzzle Number Eleven, named Meltdown. It's basically a hexagonal version of Splash Back, which itself is similar to an old two-player game of mine called Core Meltdown which itself is inspired by an old game for the Amiga (that I never actually saw but read a description of in …

Flashamatizing
Oooh, CS3 is out. Looks like I'll be scraping together $499 so that I can get the big suite upgrade. I actually could just update the stuff I use most (Flash, Dreamweaver, Fireworks) for $399, but if I throw in the extra $100 I also get Photoshop and Illustrator.

And that's a pretty good deal for Ph…

Final hitcount
Well, here's the final tally from my almost-digg-ing yesterday.

FWIW, I'm using Mochibot to collect stats on my games (as well as track if anyone's trying to host my SWF files offsite) and MochiAds to serve the ads. And their hitcounts were pretty far off. Looks like Mochibot's having trouble keepin…

I've been dugg. . .I mean Jayisgamed!
My hitcount on my games page is a mite north of its current "growth, but extremely slow" curve I've been seeing recently, as one of my fans has posted a review on The Casual Gameplay site. It's not even 10 AM here, and I'm already looking at a thousand plays.

So big big thanks for that :)

Guest logins are up
Okay, guest logins are now working on the games, so if you just wanna try out the games without creating an account, you now can.

Try 'em out and let me know if they're working. I made a lot more internal changes than are obvious, so it's possible that I killed off a platform in the doing.

And tell y…

It's up!
Double Twelve is now up and playable.

And it has a "guest login" button if you've been meaning to play my games and don't wanna futz with creating an account. Lemme know if you see any problems with this new scheme, as I'll be retrofitting all of the existing games with this.

Double Twelve is definit…

Tomorrow
Daily Puzzle Number Ten (AKA Double Twelve) should go live tomorrow. As always, the last ten percent takes up half of the time. And given that I have a dozen little icons and menus and tables and playback applets and other things that need to be built, putting up a new daily puzzle is no longer a t…

RIP CompUSA
Well mostly RIP.

The whole CompUSA saga takes me way way back to around 1989 when it was called Soft Warehouse and there was only one of 'em (that I was aware at least). It was on Marsh Lane in Dallas, and it was a thing to behold. Mind you, this was back in the day when the biggest computer retaile…

Lotsa things
I'm all back from sunny San Fran. The weather was great for the entire trip. Sunny and cool. Apparently March is a great time for the area.

We took a few extra days after the GDC to vacation there, as I realized that I've been to the area a dozen times but have never actually seen the city. Had a go…

Expo Hall Day Two
Well, not officially day two quite yet. I'm just taking in a GDC Breakfast Special (a bran muffin and a Diet Pepsi) while waiting for the hall to open.

San Francisco is a pretty nice place, but I don't know if I could live here. For one, I don't think you can move TO San Francisco from anywhere else…

Ahhh, the expo floor
Hey I'm here and enjoying the finest finery that is the GDC Expo Floor.

Or, that is to say, floors. The Expo Floor is broken up this time into three sections, one on floor two, one on floor one, and one at "Moscone North", which is across the street.

And the graft is flowing graftily. I'm fully a doz…

A few things
First off, HP is a genuine pain in the ass. As mentioned earlier, Vista complained that it didn't have current drivers for my Designjet 450c printer (basically a 4 foot wide inkjet). HP said that they'd have current drivers in late January, but missed the deadline.

Then later they posted a list of p…

Back to the bizness at hand
Okay, gamedev's back in the land of the living. GDC is coming up. I'll be doing expo coverage as always.

I just settled on what will be daily puzzle number ten. It's a bit like Shi Sen, although it'll probably be a bit quicker to play. Shi Sen's the most popular game in the lineup right now (judging…

A change of career
Awright folks, I've discovered that the big money doesn't come from writing cute little games and selling 'em at low prices. The big money comes from MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKING!

Motivational speaking is a career in which you claim to have all the answers to life's questions and can instill those answers …

I'm all vistafied
Got my gratis copy of Vista Bizness in the mail a couple of days ago. I got it free for watching a couple of "how to write software for Vista and/or .NET" videos from Microsoft.

And I posted the URL a month ago, so don't start pinin' away about how I get all the free stuff and you never get nuthin'.…

Me gets philosophicoil
I had a great idea for two new products. One is a 50-50 mix of butter and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter. It is to be called I Am Agnostic As To This Product's Disposition As Butter.

My next product will consist of a tub filled with EITHER butter or I Can't Believe It's Not Butter. There is a 50% c…

Hey, I'm a Wii developer!
Funny, when Nintendo announced that they were releasing a downloadable beta of their web browser for Wii, I was skeptical. Seems like every durned embedded device out there, from cellphones to pocketpc's to game consoles, has a web browser. And they all suck. They all lack some important technology…

Dentist, bleah
Not doing much on games this week. I've been AutoCAD-ing for much of the week.

And if you think that Imperial measurements (inch, foot, mile) are silly, you don't know the depth of it. In the southwest US (mostly Texas and California), surveys were done using a unit of measure called a vara. A vara …

two and a half things
First off, a good cheapie deal. 250 business cards for a buck from Office Depot. They're nothing special as far as business cards go (black & white, limited formatting), but the price is perfect. At the very least, you should get yourself a set with your name and phone-number and keep a few in …

Daily Puzzle Number Nine
In case you haven't noticed, Daily Puzzle Number Nine is now deployed. It's called Countdown Dice, as mentioned in earlier entries. I wrote up the rules, but it still doesn't quite cover the breadth of how to play the game. This game more than some other more straightforward ones (like Poker Patien…

Nuther good cheapo hint
Shelly and I are always looking for stuff that saves us money but doesn't significantly alter our lifestyle. Last year we took the steps of switching our phone-service to Vonage, switching our cable-service to the cheapest plan, switching Shelly's cellphone to a cheaper plan, and changing all of ou…

Daily puzzle number nine
Daily puzzle number nine is nearing readiness. And since there's enough to show off, I'll go ahead and post it.

Countdown Dice

Like Zombie Kitten Attack, this is a bit experimental. Zombie Kitten Attack was an attempt to see if I could make a turn-based puzzle game that gave the impression of being a…

Good freebie
First off, it looks like Zombie Kitten Attack is getting difficult faster. Interestingly, I was thinking of making it a mite easier than my test version, but then Jesse Chounard showed that he was still able to get to level ten and play for twelve minutes, so I think it's good enough.

For those who …

Rebalance attempt number one
Okay, here's a first cut at making Zombie Kitten Attack get harder, faster. If you're a ZKA-fan who's lost his amateur status (and your name is "Jesse"), then give this one a try. If it's good enough, then I'll fix the playback applet and re-bless this one as the new ZKA.

Open thread
Okay, I've concluded that Zombie Kitten Attack needs to be tightened up a bit. The top players are playing it for 12-15 minutes, and that's just too long. I like my games to last about five minutes max, so the game needs to get a little tougher. I know I mentioned this in the past, but I figured I'…
