Still here
First off, IE7 is shipped, and that means that you need to change the way you're serving your Flash content if you're just going with the default Flash or Dreamweaver-generated versions.

It's easier than it sounds. Go over here, download SWFObject, include a single .js file, and make changes to your…

This and that
Not much going on in the McDonald's front right now. Just a trickle of envelopes are coming in. Got three on Wednesday and three more yesterday. I don't know if they're going to continue at that pace or if one day my mailbox is gonna be bursting at the seams.

I have a small handful of unpeeled McDon…

Just a tease. . .
Seems to be working, albeit slowly on my poor little Intel Core Solo Mini running Rosetta.

After getting the SQLite object ported, the only changes I needed to make were to the code that determines the path of the prefs database.

And I needed to convert the icon. Thankfully IconWorkshop also groks Ma…

Okay, something to show off.
Oh, did I mention that sqlite.org has the latest binary downloads for Linux and Windows but not Mac, so if you want the Mac binary you have to compile it yourself, thus requiring you to download fifty jillion meg of development tools, navigate the unfamiliar XCode environment, and compile the damn …

A mite more to show off and OSX woes
Okay, I have a little more stat-o-matic to show off, along with a usability question.

The stat-o-matic app is now able to grab scores from the database and display 'em. One thing it'll eventually do is grab your username from the Flash-cookies and pre-fill the "handle" text-box, so it'll default to …

I'm statisticalyzin' (almost)
Awright, I'm at the second-to-last step of the new back-end for the games, and that's the new Stat-O-Matic Statisticalyzer app. This is a little gizmo that you'll be able to use to track scores and rankings for yourself or other players on the daily puzzles.

It's here.

It's pretty-much the way I want…

more stuff
Duck Tiles and Bulldozer will be this week. It's just one of those "pull the damn trigger, ya puss" things now. I know there's another bug in there somewhere, but I can't find it. I have auto-update functionality in there, so it's not that big a deal if that stealth bug isn't found.

I'll likely re-t…

Some distractions
Yes yes I know. "Ain't you supposed to be releasing new games any second now?"

Well you're right, I am. Buy hey, I was ADD back when ADD still meant "compute the sum of two numbers", so I cherish my distractions.

First, I noticed that Google Reader got a facelift. I must agree that it looks quite nic…

Hey, there's a light there
Too danged much multitasking here. Every time I get significant work done on something, I need to disengage and do some significant work on something else.

Anyway, it looks like Duck Tiles and Bulldozer can come out at the same time. Here's where I am.

Bulldozer - 95% (just late testing)

Duck Tiles - …

It's the most wonderful time of the year
The rules for the McDonald's Monopoly contest are now posted. Looks like it's not as good a deal as last year. Last year every third entry had a $3 Best Buy coupon, with the rest having a $1 coupon, for an average value of $1.66 per entry.

This year 1/12 of the entries have a $5 coupon with the rest…

A diversion
Had computer problems a couple of days ago, so I decided to do the bigass "scan the drives for anything possibly wrong" thing. While that was going on, I decided to catch up on some scanning, as the big polyglot printer-scanner-fax-thingy is hooked up to Shelly's machine.

Today's entry is an interes…

Stuff I learned
Things I took home from Flashforward. . .

1. What the heck was I thinking not using AMFPHP from the very start? I'd been avoiding it in favor of PHPObject just for simplicity's sake, but I was sold after a presentation on Flash-Database connectivity at FF. In retrospect, the Flash NetConnection Debu…

I be's back
I'm all back and suchlike from Austin now. Getting things back to normal. I'll be putting together an article about FlashForward, what I learned, and what sneak-previews I got of unreleased bits of web-development goodness.

. . .and, knowing gamedev's publishing schedule, it'll get posted to the sit…

me posts from Austin
I'm currently in Austin pressing palms and spreading goodwill at the FlashForward conference (google for it. I'm too lazy to post a link). I got to see the Adobe keynote that outlined Flash's direction for the next year or so. I'll write up an article about it and hopefully will get it posted on ga…

Usability
I spent most of the weekend either cleaning the house or being a lazy layabout, so not much new game progress to report. I do have enough Bulldozer music to finish that project, so I might take care of that soon.

One thing I never much liked about my games' usability is how the panel at the end obsc…

Okay, a little more to show off
The "next generation" of daily puzzles are proceeding apace. There's a bit more to show off.

1. The first cut of my "standard" score-pause-volume display. All of the games will eventually have the same layout of stuff along the bottom of the window. It's not really necessary, but I never did like th…

Oh, and two other things
phpFlashMyAdmin is a good thing if you work with mySQL in any capacity. It's basically the old familiar phpmyadmin tool (a HTML front-end for mySQL), but completely re-skinned in Flash. That means the whole thing's much more interactive and easy to use. For example, if you want to change something …

More press stuff
Looks like I'm gonna be doing press for FlashForward2006 in Austin in a couple of weeks. It runs from September 11-14. I'll probably have a writeup a few days after.

PriceLine is a Good Thing. Austin has what is probably the biggest danged Motel 6 on the planet, right off I-35. Checking the site, th…

Figured I might as well show it off
The new back-end for the daily puzzles is proceeding apace. The new back-end database and account manager app seem to be working just fine. Now I'm trying to work it into a game. Since I didn't wanna take down my existing six games (because I, like you, need my confusebox fix), I decided to make a …

Dang, I can think of about a million uses for this
I thought the GP32 was gonna be the next Cybiko, but I was wrong. It's The Chumby.

Basically it's a little thing. It's running Linux, it's got wifi and a touch-screen, and it'll run widgets written in Flash.

And it's about $150.

And I can think of about a million uses for it. . .

  • Digital clock that pla…

Onomatopoeia J. Blastocyst checkin' in here. . .
I don't know if it's a blind dictionary matchup or a twisted sense of humor, but I find some of the "from" names in spam emails to be funny. Just today I've gotten emails from:

Drone H. Shape
Reshuffling M. Polymaths
Bushy C. Mayoralty
Rumba C. Katrina
Hardtop Tuna

A little googling showed that most of '…

John Versus The Freakin' Flesh Eating Bacteria!
Yeah, I've been outta pocket for a couple of days. If you've been reading this anonymous blog written by a person who uses the same writing-style as my wife, you might've heard something about me having to go to the hospital.

It's true, I was in the hospital for the past three days. Here's the rough…

musical happenings
Music's proceeding apace. I got about five emails from my help-wanted ad in the previous entry. I'm trying to make deals to get at least some music from everyone, mainly because everyone who's contacted me so far has sent me some good demo material.

And Rick's also promised me somethng unique. I gue…

Attention musical types
I just posted a solicitation for music-monkeys here.

If you're a music person who wants to make a couple of bucks (no, literally a couple of bucks. I'm a cheap bastard) email me.

If you know a music person send him there.

That is all.

Oh, and that was a good suggestion yesterday to make the buttons up …

Google checkout and I'm a winner!
Google Checkout seems to be happy now. Big thanks to CaffeineAddict for taking advantage of my 99-cent offer and ferreting out a couple of show-stopping bugs in my commerce system.

And, as usual, all of the bugs could've been averted if I hadn't been a dumb person and. . .

1. Rearranged the file loca…

New software
Taking a few minutes' break from my google checkout integration. Should have it working well enough to show off to other people today. If you're interested in helping me test in a production (read: real money) environment, lemme know.

Google checkout
Wrestling with Google Checkout order processing. It's more powerful than PayPal and gives you a few more capabilities that I'll never use, like the ability to validate shipping costs, tax tables, and coupon codes from within Google's shopping cart page.

Also, their security is ponderous. Paypal's wa…

Bask in the glory that is me
Don't bother playing Pop Pies today. I broke 13,000 points, leaving only three balloons on the whole board.

It's unbeatable. I'll be number one tomorrow and you won't. Resign yourselves to it.
