August is here, and I get pwned
Making a new start with August, at least in the birthday party department. There were five weekends in July, and Shelly and I had birthday parties scheduled on four of 'em.

We had Maggie's cousin Joseph's party on the weekend of the fourth. Kinder-Care pals had birthdays on the weekends of the 10th …

I'm all podcasted
Awright, I've got a podcast going now, but it's not exactly what you'd expect. I still don't have a podcast of this developer journal, mainly because it doesn't overly need one. I just thought it'd be cool. So that's on hold. I found a better idea.

I'm currently in the process of putting together an…

Syndicate-o-matic
Hey, good news. Gamedev's finally put together RSS feeds for the developer journals, so if you've got blog-reading software you can now add your favorite gamedev journals (which will undoubtedly include mine what with my journal being the best one here).

Put the following URL into your blog reader o…

The crab fable, as I would've written it
Once upon a time there were two crabs. Their names were Belvin and Nivleb.

Crab models are courtesy of my daughter, who is in on the conspiracy.

Belvin was a philosopher and a mensch and was schooled in the ways of Sartre and Rand. Nivleb was an engineer who had graduated from a school in the Southwe…

it's time to come and play with the Tweenies
Yet another David-free blog-post.

Thanks for the feedback on the tweening classes. The problem I found with 'em is the problem I've found with other neat effects. If you test out the effect in just one spot, and it looks great, it suddenly makes the rest of your game look sloppy in comparison, so yo…

mc_tween fills me with love
Attn, David. No mention of you in this one either.

Actually, I might sneak a dig in somewhere. You probably should read all the way through just in case.

Flash now has built-in tweening classes that allow you to do things to make graphics bounce around easily. Problem is, like much of the Flash class…

The salad bar olives are staring at me
I've gotta watch what I say, because I'm being monitored.

No, really. There's a guy monitoring this journal looking for stuff that he can use against me.

No, really!

I'm serious!

Anyway, if you want him to read your stuff too, just post a comment. His name is David. Tell him hi.

Girls are puzzling
Ahh, the wonderful world of girl ownership. A big step in the life of a young girl is when she gets to choose and put on her own clothes. It's a cherished freedom, so you've gotta work with 'em on it because kids don't like having their freedoms questioned.

So Maggie's currently walking around with …

How to be a non-idiot, lessons 36 and 37
Yes, folks, it's time for two more installments in the chronicles of. . .

HOW TO BE A NON-IDIOT

Lesson 36: To be a non-idiot, avoid doing things that are really stupid.

Case Study 1: Rockstar games put a pornographic minigame in their teen-rated game, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. That is really stup…

whatevercast
I'm just trying to figure out some company's business models.

For example, Air America Radio now plays here in Dallas. Problem is, they broadcast on AM, and I've got a steel-frame house. Steel frame houses and AM radio aren't a good mix. I can pick up the station just fine in my car, but I'd need to…

Flash 8 is gonna be big
The development environment is still two months away from being released, and already people are doing some pretty impressive stuff, mostly thanks to the new pixel-fiddling and bitmap-caching support.

You need a webcam and a microphone to play this, but there's an applet here that'll use both. Bubbl…

Almost stick a fork in it
For a couple of years, the big streaming web-game question has been "what of shockwave". I can now confidently state that the answer to that question is "it will be going away".

For the uninitiated, Shockwave movies are created with Macromedia Director, which is an authoring tool with a pedigree rea…

Yikes
Look, it's the worst mouse ever!

Worse than the the original TRS-80 mice that had steel balls and used trimmer-pots to get position information. And when the pot reached its high or low limit, the ball wouldn't roll anymore. That mouse had the excuse of being one of the first commercial mice ever ma…

Wonka versus Wonka
Maggie's grandparents took her to the circus today, so Shelly and I decided to take in a movie. Since I heard that "Cinderella Man" was basically "Seabiscuit" with Russell Crowe playing the part of the horse, we decided to do the new Willy Wonka movie.

Since the original and this one were so similar…

Sheesh
Read the previous entry, you friggin' sock monkeys.

I post a dozen interesting conversation-starters and one person comments.

Meanwhile, if I said "Hitlar" I'd get six dozen people commenting.

Do I need to loathe you all? Must I punish you?

Many things
Followup on Shelly's arm. Turns out she's got a hairline fracture of her elbow and possibly humerus. Usually this is a thing requiring surgery because elbow fractures just don't heal, but it's so minor that she's just going to have to wear a splint for a few weeks.

I'm working on finishing Brain Bo…

"apace" is a good word
The podcast idea is proceeding apace. I've got a plan for how it's going to proceed. I've been using Sound Forge to do my sound effects for years, so I'm quite taken care of in the recording software department.

Looks like I need the following.

1. A cheap microphone and elbowed arm-thingy, so I can s…

I'm clever, praise me
Finished two belated book reviews today (1, 2). Normally it's not that notable, except for the fact that it is, backed up by exhaustive research, the first use of the term "warm weasel spit" in published literature.

I really need to get started on that novel. I'm efferfreakinvescent.

Still working o…

There must be more
I've been running this journal text-only for about eight years now, and I've decided that there should just be more.

One idea would be a podcast. A periodic "Code Zone Radio Minute" could be fun and would likely get a following, but I see the following disadvantages:

- It doesn't live forever. I know…

Ugh

Ugh

More terrorist attacks. I've been reading the Macromedia blog aggregator, which apparently has about a half-dozen posters from London. Seeing terrorist acts can be very affecting from a great distance, but having it happen down the block from you has got to be in a class by itself.

The closest I can…

Back now
Hey, I'm back. Took off last Thursday (6/30) for some family fourth-of-July stuff. My brother's kid was celebrating his 5th birthday, so we drove the 12 hours to Nashville for birthday party doings and to meet up with relatives. Maggie loves her cousin in a powerful way, and my bro's got a pool, so…

Miscellaneous miscellany
Took Maggie to the doc for her belated 3-year checkup. We finally got a new doctor, as our old pre-move doc is now about 25 miles away.

It's interesting to read the blog of my pal Terri, as her kid and Maggie are so very very different. In one of Terri's entries, she mentioned that Dee (her kid, abo…

More dozer doings
Thanks for all the feedback on the animation. To get a little more feedback, I posted a thread in the lounge at https://www.gamedev.net/community/forums/topic.asp?topic_id=327793 where I got some good feedback on the "to border or not to border" question. I think the best came from the last two res…

I need your opinion about them dancin' dozers!
Got motivated today and decided to work on the animation a bit more. With quite a bit of tweaking, I was able to get Cinema 4D (which I just finished writing an extensive review, so watch for it) and Emotion 3D to play nicely. Emotion 3D's 3DS-importer is horribly broken, so I stuck with the .X imp…

big free, no kill no tree
To quote my spiritual advisor, J.R. "Bob" Dobbs, too much is always better than not enough.

And to quote my other spiritual advisor, myself, free stuff is cool.

That being said, here's too much for free.

It's The New C Standard: An Economic and Cultural Commentary, which is a 1616-page monstrosity tha…

Freebeez and doings
Got two freebies. . .

Linspire 5.0, formerly Lindows, is an easy-to-install Linux. Use coupon code "LycorisWelcome" and you'll get the download link.

Deep Paint 3D is now discontinued and is apparently free. Check here or here for downloads. I used an older version a while back. While it's not a good…

Oh boy oh boy oh boy
This one's gonna be REALLY REALLY REALLY GOOD. Much better than the last two, and certainly better than the last one. It's gonna revive the whole series. It'll be really great, you'll see. Just wait and see. It's gonna ROCK!!

Why?

Because it's got this really really really cool car. It's sort of a cr…

Enough introspection
Back to the freebies!

Free downloadable books from Apress. The book on SharpDevelop looks like it could be particularly useful.
