Three years. Sheesh.
We celebrated Miss Maggie's third birthday yesterday (although she's not according-to-hoyle three until Wednesday). We had the event over at Pump It Up Parties, which worked out rather well. For the uninitiated, Pump It Up Parties is a place where you can rent bigass party rooms that are full of bo…

Oooooh, I'm a happy boy
Google is officially the Best Thing In The Universe(tm). They just put version 3.0 of the Google Toolbar into beta, and it's got a feature that browsers should've implemented around 1996. . .

Spell Checking!!!

One thing that always always got under my skin about this whole "blogging" phenomenon is th…

Yes, even code monkeys can be knowitall snobs
Yet-another clipart comic.

I decided that I needed a recurring character. And since it's just easier to base a character on yourself, I invented "The Lazy Programmer". This character is based on myself, only he's not as lazy as I am because people cannot accept that a person as lazy as myself can ac…

Boy, some people are just classy.
Despite having been officially off the market for several years now, I try to help people who still have some of the old versions of my games, specifically the old Expert Software versions. Even though Expert's been gone for quite a few years, I get an email from people who need help once in a whil…

Hmm, shady deal?
I'm checking out the MGM settlement and the list of affected movies and replacements (1, 2).

Bryan is a bit bummed about the selection, but he's not seeing the roses for the thorns. He sees that he can trade in The Princess Bride for Phantasm 4. I see that I can buy a $1.50 DVD of 8 Heads In A Duffl…

Eh?

Eh?

Today I told Shelly a joke that only someone over 30 would understand.

Me: Knock Knock.
Shelly: Who's there?
Me: The Streets of San Francisco.
Shelly: The Streets of San Francisco who?
Me: The Streets of San Francisco, a Quinn/Martin Production.

Actually probably over 35.

Not free, but given that it's a 96.3% price reduction from the original, it's worth a look.

The December edition of Digit Magazine (a shiny bouncy design publication with thick pages and few words) is giving away Bryce 4.0 in the pack-in CD. Yeah, I know its a couple of months old, but it takes a co…

Reading reading
Urgh, I intended to release a new book review every two weeks, and I'm already behind. I've gotta start reading more.

On the personal front, I recently finished The Gods Themselves by Asimov. It's obviously part of a larger story that was never finished, but at least it's got enough bits of the enti…

Interesting product of the day
Namo FlashCreator. Far as I can tell, this is the first serious competitor to Flash for building SWF content.

I played with it a bit and here are my initial impressions
  • The interface is a shameless ripoff of Flash. Just about every panel and tool is a pixel-for-pixel lookalike.
  • Once you get under the …

Darkness washed over the dude. . .
. . .darker than a black steer's tookus on a moonless prairie night. . .there was no bottom.

Okay, maybe not that dark, but I am disappointed by MDM's long-awaited Flash-EXE builder for PocketPC's. Their Windows version distinguished itself by being a really nice solution for making first-class exec…

Free stuff. Wheeee!
Well my pink highlighter-pen arrived yesterday, delivered by DHL. Must've cost 'em ten bucks to package and ship my $1.50 pen.

The padded mailers and DVD player arrived this morning via UPS. Not bad for $25.

Only thing is that now I've gotta figure out what to do with the goldurned DVD player. We've …

How do some places make money?
I was just reading one of my favorite websites, and somebody posted a new deal from Viking office supplies. Buy $25 worth of stuff and get a free DVD player.

I did need to buy some new padded mailers and Shelly needed a particular model of "highlighter" marker that was her favorite. I added both to …

I'm staying up late keeping Shelly company while she finishes up a project, so I worked up another comic.

Again, it's all clipart. Amazing, eh?

Pulled the trigger
After spending some time wrestling with a user-system for the games, I decided that it was a waste of time and went with a third-party content-management system. After a bit of research, I decided that Mambo was the way to go. After a bit of reading, I pulled the trigger and installed it on the cod…

Bask in the glory that is the COFFEE CART!!
Awright, all of the remaining bits of the coffee cart and the futon arrived yesterday afternoon, and the unused half of my office is no longer a dumping ground for leftover crap but is a THING OF BEAUTY FOR ALL TO BEHOLD. It belongs on the friggin' Learning Channel, it's so shockingly well-designed…

Damn this looks nice
While browsing around, I found the best 3D cartoon bulldozer ever modeled.

It's got my bulldozer beaten by a mile. If there's anyone out there who can make me a bulldozer with this much personality, my wallet's open to you.

Oooh look, I've got mono
If you're a programmer (and you are), you spend a lot of time with your text editor, be it standalone or part of an IDE. If you have no ambition whatsoever, you leave your editor's font as the default. More often than not, the default is the old Windows 3.1 pre-TrueType Courier. If you're ambition …

Umm, never mind
On a whim I decided to check out the Container Store's website, and it turned out that they've got some medium-duty shelves that fit the bill perfectly. Here's the not-quite-complete coffee altar.

The 18x24 inch shelves were perfect for the fridge. They didn't have poles that were the right height, …

Need some furniture help
Well I'm down to one piece of furniture at the Hattan Cult Compound (as it has been dubbed by a pal) that I need for the office. I need a little rolling cart that's capable of holding all the coffee stuff. We've currently got everything on a folding table, but I want to make the whole affair more v…

Yeah, well I still got the most toys
Scrolling down to 12/30, you'll see that I purchased a DevNet professional subscription using the "avoid paying franchise tax" money CivilGrrl had. Also interestingly, Macromedia discontinued the DevNet program a day later in favor of a new "volume licensing program" that is so arcane and complicat…

Free MiniMac!
Okay, it does require another purchase :)

Given that those new MiniMacs are selling for $500, you'd actually save $106 getting one along with Studio MX over the purchase of Studio MX alone.

Umm. . .
I don't wanna sound curmudgeounly, but I'm a bit underwhelmed by Apple's latest offerings. It looks like they looked at the competition and said "we can beat 'em at their own game", but fell pretty short. Apple machines have always come up short in an (no pun intended) apples-to-apples comparison w…

Something game related? Gads.
I'm teaching myself PHP. I wanted to use that new "baby SQL" that's built into PHP5 rather than MySQL, as it looks just as good and an order of magnitude simpler. My webspace provider, however, is still on PHP4 with the thinking that PHP5 breaks existing code (which it apparently does), so they can…

I must control myself.
We've got three coffee machines in the house. We've got a Senseo machine in the downstairs kitchen that's for the weekends. We've got two machines at the coffee-kiosk upstairs, a BrewStation for the everyday Folgers and a Nespresso machine to create the Water Of Life.

For the uninitiated, the Nespre…

With eyes blue-on-blue I commute the Water of Life for I am the Kwisatz Haderach
For the first time in ten years, I did something unprecedented. I made a new-year's resolution. I am resolved to lose a significant amount of weight because I weigh too much and it's starting to adversely affect my quality of life. I've been wrestling with the insurance company regarding weight los…

Software Outlet is cleaning house. Here are a couple. . .
  • Corel DRAW 7 for three bucks. It's a pretty old version, but an unbeatable price. Far as I can tell, the difference between the "Select Edition" and the standard one is the amount of clipart and fonts that come with the program. The program i…

Who's got the most toys? Me, that's who!
CivilGrrl's got a bit of money left over at the end of the year, and we'll have to pay franchise tax on anything left in the account, so we're making sure all bills and debts and such are paid off. While checking for software upgrades, I ordered a year's worth of DevNet Professional Subscription fr…

Next Week On ABC: The Fish Police Save Christmas
Looking at the Internet Movie Database and Amazon, it is clear that Christmas is the most fragile of holidays. Searching for "Saves Christmas", I find that Christmas has thus-far been saved by. . .

  • Elmo the muppet
  • Inspector Gadget
  • Felix the Cat
  • The Berenstain Bears

A record of sorts, I guess
Well, it looks like I'll be getting just under the wire for my 2004 New Year's resolution to watch my 100th Roger Corman movie. Netflix had Saint Jack and Targets which are, far as I can tell, numbers 98 and 99.

Targets is a bit of an oddity. It was Peter Bogdanovich's first theatrical movie, predat…
