Testing testing testing
Yay. After spending way too much time on other pointless pursuits such as running a civil engineering company, I've finally handed out Duck Tiles for external level testing.

I've still got one or two spots open for relief-testers, but you've gotta be dedicated. Lemme know if you're interested.

Note to those who post comment spam
I get notified every time someone leaves a comment, and I can delete 'em faster than you can post 'em.

Actually, I'm thinking of looking up your competitors and changing your URL's to theirs in your comments.

Good tutorial
Here is a good tutorial on how to make a "jump on the platforms" style game. It's written for Flash and ActionScript, but it should apply to other stuff fairly easily. It's also got nice little examples embedded into the text. Enjoy!

There needs to be a word
Sometimes there's no English word to explain a concept. A good example would be "Schaudenfreude", which roughly translates to English as "shameful secret happiness at the failures of others".

I need a word. This is what you would use to describe a person who's such an egomaniac that they've gotta pa…

Good read
Somebody pointed me to an excellent little analysis of "Marble Madness" style isometric-perspective arcade games.

If you also get the chance, try out the author's Christmas-themed Marble Madness knockoff here.

Heapin' helpin of kudos
To Macromedia again this time for having a simple and unobtrusive licensing agreement.

I was cleaning out the software-closet again last week and sold off a slack copy of Flash MX and Fireworks 4 on eBay. The Flash was never registered, but I had installed and registered the Fireworks but had later …

Got a new personal focus
I've decided that I'm gonna read all the Isaac Asimov stuff that I can find. I found a cheap copy of It's Been a Good Life at the half-price bookstore and was amazed. I'd never really given the guy much thought beyond my high-school reading of I Robot, but he was quite a scientist and a very prolif…

Well dang, that was quick
I guess I should've waited 12 hours or so for my last entry, because the very next morning, Flash MX 2004 was released. Anyway, I'm just starting to wade through the new features. I was able to load up Duck Tiles and recompile it for Flash Player 7. I did hit a couple of snags, though. First off, i…

Oooh, pre-order
Looks like Macromedia's now taking pre-orders for their 2004 stuff, claiming that they'll be shipping September (AKA this month). In the past, their dates have been pretty good. Looks like the upgrade's gonna be $299 for me (to get the Flash MX Pro), which ain't too bad I guess. Certainly could be …

FLASH! AAAAAHHHH!
Flash 2004 is coming out this month, and it looks like it's gonna be a Good Thing. Here are the new features to which I'm looking forward. . .

1. New forms-based development paradigm. Since folks are starting to use Flash for forms and components in the same way they used Java AWT and Swing in the p…

Just sumpin' I found
While geeking out and taking a last look through that Dragon Magazine Archive that I'm selling on ebay, I found the following. . .

Okay, it's an inside joke. Enjoy it anyway!

This time they go out!
Awright, I'm doing some spring cleaning, and this time I'm determined to sell off that bigass collection of Game Developer magazines on my shelf.

Here they are!

I've also got some other fun stuff going out, like some books and videos, a rocket motor casing, and the 250-issue Dragon Magazine archive o…

Yet again once more still another good deal
While taking advantage of softwareoutlet.com's 24-hour specials on Nero 6.0 Suite for $10, I noticed a true cheap deal. They've got CorelDraw 7 for $14.99. They've also got CorelDraw 8 (which is the one I use) for $29.95, which is also quite good. Looking at an old review of CorelDraw 7, looks like…

Well I turned to the dark side of the force
While at the Radio Shack Outlet Store (AKA the only reason to live in Fort Worth, Texas) searching for a new digital clock (so that I'll have one on my side of the bed and I don't have to look over Shelly to see what time it is at night, but I digress), I noticed that they had a couple of open-box …

And I'm gonna hold my breath until I get it!
My list of movies that must show themselves on DVD or else I will start to cause trouble. . .

The Loved One

Not of This Earth (the original 1957 version, not the softcore 1988 version or the not-as-much-fun 1995 version)

Wild Palms

The Maxx

Aeon Fluxx

Also on my list was the Ernie Kovacs collection, but …

Abstract games
I've always had a soft spot in my heart for abstract games. For the uninitiated, abstract games are games like checkers or reversi that don't attempt to model reality in any way. While some games try to shoehorn some kind of historical or science-fiction context into their games, abstract games by-…

'Getting the business' followup
Sorry. Forgot to post the final chapter of my adventures with "the business". A couple of weeks ago (quite a long time after the meeting, actually), my "sponsors" finally called to follow up and find out when I was planning to sign up with their terrific business opportunity. I told Shelly I had no…

All good things. . .
I read with sadness that Al Stevens is, after 15 years, shuttering his "C Programming" column in Dr. Dobb's Journal. Through the years DDJ has gone through ups and downs, but Stevens' column was always a great constant, an informative and conversational column on C programming. Al's now 60 and is g…

Features I can get used to
Ever get used to a feature of a language that's just do durned useful that it spoils you and you suddenly find yourself using it all the time and can't imagine not using it?

Well, JavaScript/JScript/ActionScript's object model is starting to spoil me in that way. In no way is it as rigorous and well…

comments on comments
Thanks for the comments on my getting "The Business" a few days ago. Thus far, the couple has not called back to follow up. According to the fast-talking sales-guy, not following up is a big no-no, but they're apparently smart enough to realize that I wasn't buying their line of bull.

The "most bon…

FreebieFest!
Found another good "cross-rebate" deal. For those not in the know of my ad-hoc terminology, a cross-rebate deal is a deal in which you can purchase two products and get a competative update rebate for the other product. With a little luck, it allows you to get two products for free.

This one's at Co…

The day I got 'The Business'
This is a long weird story, folks, so just sit back and stare in perplexed wonder. . .

As you probably know, my wife and I both work at home. What this means is that we often find ourselves working long hours and not getting out much. We recognized this a while back and have always made a point of "…

PSP 8 does not suck
Just got my update to PSP 8, and I must say I'm impressed. It addressed pretty-much every complaint I had about PSP 7, basically concerning the pervasive non-dockable windows containing important stuff. They've reorganized the UI to take care of this.

I've been watching TechTV's weekly Photoshop tri…

It can only go downhill from here
Ever have one of those days when you feel that the entire universe is tilted in your direction? I had one of those days yesterday.

First off, I went to the mailbox to find a check for $99. About six weeks ago I tried out one of those online casino promotions that gives you $20 in free gambling-money…

Obligatory Matrix Review
Well, we had a couple of hours of babysitter-overlap yesterday, so Shelly and I decided to take in the new Matrix movie.

I don't agree with the PVP-guy that it's "Highlander 2". To me, it was more like "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom". While "Highlander 2" dispensed entirely with the continuit…

Breeze tutorials do not suck
Got this in the mail from Macromedia. I thought it was neat not because of what it was teaching, which was fairly ho-hum, but at the quality of the streaming interactive tutorial technology they were using.

It's done with a gizmo that Macromedia bought called Br…

A chunk of my past for sale. . .on ebay!
Saw this on Slashdot. Tandy's selling off their subway cars on ebay here.

Tandy (formerly Radio Shack and now Radio Shack again) was my first job after college, as long as you don't count a 6-week stint at a local clone shop in College Station to prevent going broke while job-searching. Tandy had a …

New package, and it's big enough to see!
Well, that was quick. The same day that I noticed the new package on the Cosmi website, I was at Office Depot and they had a big fancy display of Swift/Cosmi stuff, and my games were there!

Here's the new packaging. I think it looks pretty good.

Here's the back.

FWIW, they're selling for $9.99 each, a…

Yet again once more still another freebie
If you like playing gambling games and you're cheap like me, then you might like this deal. Most of those online gambling sites allow you to play the games without using real money, and the games are quite well done. It appears that many of the casinos license the same software and just stamp their…

Let me repeat
The House of the Dead movie is going to suck, and I have proof. . .

The movie trailer

[voiceover]

a rave. . .
with a big SEGA logo. . .
on an island. . .
with really cheap-looking zombies. . .
And a badly done effect borrowed from The Matrix. . .

Somebody help me out. If the movie is called HOUSE of the de…
